Wow what a journey. Over a year ago CD Projekt Red got in touch and asked us if we would like to make a video about some of the scientific or philosophical aspects of Cyberpunk 2077. Just like most of the internet we were super excited and eager for this game to come out finally. The Witcher series is one of the most entertaining series we played ourselves and Cyberpunk seemed like it could genuinely top even that. So it was a super easy yes from us and we went on to make the video, putting in a lot of love and care to do this collaboration justice. And of course, as the release date got pushed back, our video release date did too. So we have been keeping this video a secret for quite some time, hopefully you like it. When this video comes out a good chunk of the Kurzgesagt team will either download or already be playing the game. Sorry Kurzgesagt but living an eternity in a digital utopia is wrong and here's why: There will always be billions, quadrillions or sextillions of planets within our hubble sphere where life is having a very bad time (possibly much worse than here) and they could use our help. Every civilization capable of helping others can contribute to raising the average quality of life in the entire universe, even if said universe is infinite, provided everyone participates in their own region of space. Living a selfish super-happy eternal life will only be an option when space has expanded enough so everyone is out of everyone else's reach. So let's ride our stellar engine as fast as possible through our galaxy and have this eternal utopia discussion in a few trillion years when we spend the rest of our existence harvesting Milkdromeda's black hole's angular momentum with mirrors.

Sorry, but I would totally do it. The only thing that makes any individual human "unique," is the specific dynamic pattern of neurons they have. This is what makes up your personality, memory, and everything that you are. Assuming perception is reality; when you upload your brain, you’ll have a 50% chance of opening your eyes in an immortal representation of yourself. We’ll all be dead in a hundred years anyway- I’d take those odds.

the main problem is, that a scan of your consciousness that gets uploaded to a virtual reality is just a copy or you, not you. so what is the use of this? it is not immortality in a sense that your phenomenological experience is saved but just "immoratlity" in a narcisstic way that perserves your character in a virtual world with your own being dying not being able to see that.

I think you missed the point that when we experience all posssible experiences (past, other planets, etc) in our virtual minds, there will be no more “I”. Human knowledge will converge. We will all have experienced all life and its possibilities and we will work as One. One single consciousness. And this Single will then split as a hive when we send spaceships out there to explore other galaxies. We will live as one. But it wont lose anything by splitting or multiplying. Those concepts dont exist anymore. We will be everywhere. We will live as One, breathe as One, and dream all possible creative alternatives as One, learn as One, grow as One.

The factor that I’m particularly interested in regarding a simulated future is that two things will happen when we achieve a simulated reality: 1. Humanity will cease to exist 2.
