Fair play to the first driver who called it as it is. Yes safety has come a long way and I'm sure the design of the suits and helmets played a huge part in protecting him but the he should have just smashed into the guard rail. I imagine the failure of the guard rail played a part in the way the car broke and the fire that started.

The thing is, if the guard rails withstanded the crash, the driver might be dead by now... because that would put much more force on the car. It would be like a solid wall crash. Maybe in this case, it was good it gave way. I don't know though.

Paradoxically, the failing barrier allowed a more gentle deceleration, thus preserving consciousness.. just saying. Old UK logician here :)

They stopped in race refuelling for safety reasons, but, statistically you are more likely to have a crash at the start of the race. So is it wise to have full tanks at the start?

Why it caught fire is simple. EVERYTHING these days is engineered just enough to "pass" expectations set forth. Was this fire preventable? Yes, absolutely. Engineers that had their hands in this likely engineered these safety measures initially far better than what is currently on the track. Thats just how engineering works. If the allowed tolerances are xyz, you can bet your ass they didn't exceed those parameters in the slightest. I wouldn't say its the engineers faults, rather the racing industry where they willingly cut any corner they can to have an advantage. Someone at some point said, hey, this is much safer, but it weights 5 pounds more...followed by a chorus of, we cant have that, thats 5 pounds we dont need.

The important thing is that Romain is fine. FIA will surely take extra precautions about things like these when it comes both to F1 cars themselves and especially the tracks. Hats off of course to the medical teams and fire dept and the marshalls that managed to get everything under control so quick. When it comes to safety, these cars should be able to stand full impact at top speed at any barrier on any track, including collisions with other cars. Obviously safety in racing has been gone up significally since the old days, but this shows up sometimes its not enough. Hope to see Romain back on the track and everything goes well from now on.
